Zhejiang Health Products and Cosmetics Industry Association Event: A Visit to Zhejiang Kaixiya Silkworm Biological Industry Co., Ltd.

08.05.2026

Zhejiang Kaixiya Silkworm Biological Industry Co., Ltd. is located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Kaixiya Group. Kaixiya Group was formerly the Zhejiang Branch of China Silk Corporation, established in 1950, and is a leading enterprise in China’s genuine silk product exports.

In terms of industrial layout, Kaixiya Group is using biotechnology as the innovation engine for the health industry and extending its layout into the silkworm and mulberry biotechnology industry chain. Leveraging its own mulberry and silkworm resource advantages of 200,000 mu (approximately 13,333 hectares) in Zhejiang, Yunnan, and other regions, the Group has established a complete supply chain system covering silk fibroin material applications, mulberry twig and leaf extract applications, and Sanghuang cultivation. It is the first enterprise in China capable of supplying high-quality, high-molecular-weight silk fibroin in bulk.

In addition, the Group has established the Xiaoyunlong Sericulture Base in Haining, Jiaxing, covering more than 500 mu (approximately 33 hectares), where it carries out diversified operations such as mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, and educational study programs. Focusing on two main lines—silkworm and mulberry biotechnology and the health industry—the Silkworm Biological Industry Company conducts scientific research and technical services for the comprehensive utilization of mulberry and silkworm resources and develops a series of silkworm and mulberry biotechnology products. In terms of food ingredients, the Silkworm Biological Industry Company fully leverages the dual-purpose medicinal and edible properties of mulberry leaves. Centering on their rich active substances such as alkaloids, polysaccharides, and polyphenols, it has researched and developed nutritional and health ingredients including mulberry leaf extract, mulberry leaf powder, and mulberry leaf concentrate that help improve blood sugar control, body fat management, and metabolic syndrome. These can be widely applied in categories such as low-GI foods, health foods, functional foods, dairy products, and baked goods.

This event was initiated and organized by the Zhejiang Health Products and Cosmetics Industry Association, inviting a number of related enterprises to jointly conduct a corporate study tour.

Company representatives visited the Xiaoyunlong Sericulture Park silkworm and mulberry base, the standardized Sanghuang production workshop, the testing laboratory, and the silk culture exhibition hall, gaining an in-depth understanding of the artificial cultivation of Sanghuang, the full-process quality control system, and the company’s customized raw material service capabilities in silkworm and mulberry biotechnology.

2. Crossover Pop-Up

Representatives from various companies, leveraging their own technological strengths and core businesses, focused on diverse fields such as functional foods, beauty and skincare, and deep-processing applications. Centering on characteristic raw materials such as mulberry leaves and Sanghuang, they engaged in brainstorming and cross-industry co-creation, exploring new commercialization ideas such as co-branded product development, in-depth raw material development, implementation of efficacy scenarios, and tapping into young consumer market segments.

3. Dialogue TALK

Huang Chen, Deputy General Manager of Kaixiya Holdings and General Manager of Kaisang Biotechnology, introduced the Group’s overall layout, the development plan for the Sanghuang industry, the construction of raw material bases, and its market channel advantages, and answered questions of industry concern such as brand positioning and cooperation models. He Yumin, Deputy Director of the Product R&D Department, analyzed Sanghuang’s active ingredients, strain development, and pharmacological effects from a scientific research perspective. Chen Lizhong, Product Director, introduced the company’s R&D and production of mulberry leaf ultrafine powder, and shared in detail the application prospects, value, and cases of mulberry leaves as a medicine-food homologous raw material in functional foods and cosmetics. Company representatives sampled mulberry leaf ice cream on site.

4. Thought-Sharing Session

Corporate representatives engaged in in-depth exchanges on raw material value extraction and commercialization implementation, focusing on issues such as upstream-downstream standards coordination, balancing raw material performance and cost, and enhancing upstream supply capacity. Mulberry-derived raw material industries such as Sanghuang and mulberry leaves show outstanding potential, but industry pain points remain, including inconsistent standards, insufficient efficacy data support, restrictive compliance thresholds, and a weak consumer market narrative. Corporate representatives suggested that upstream enterprises strengthen basic research, align with downstream admission requirements, balance product performance and cost, and provide supporting application solutions to help downstream players create differentiated products.
